Types of Unicode Arrow Symbols
The simple arrows (→ ← ↑ ↓) come from the Arrows block and have thin, neutral strokes that match body text. The Dingbats block adds the heavy, decorative arrows (➤ ➜ ➔ ➡ ➽) that stand out in bios and headers. Double arrows (⇒ ⇔ ⟹) are borrowed from logic and mathematics, where ⇒ means "implies". On LinkedIn, ➤ and ✔ are the standard way to make a bullet list, because LinkedIn strips real list formatting. In Discord and Slack, ↳ at the start of a message signals a reply to the line above. In documents and spreadsheets, → and ⇒ replace "leads to" and "therefore", and ↗ ↘ mark rising and falling numbers.
Arrows That Turn into Emoji
A handful of arrows – ➡ ⬅ ⬆ ⬇ ↔ ↕ ↗ ↘ ↙ ↖ ↩ ↪ ⤴ ⤵ 🔄 – are also emoji. On phones they may render as a blue emoji square rather than a plain text arrow, depending on the app. If you want the plain text look, choose a neighbouring arrow that is not an emoji, such as → instead of ➡ or ⇧ instead of ⬆.
