Everyday Math Symbols
Most people need a small set: the true multiplication × (U+00D7) and division ÷ signs, the minus sign − (longer than a hyphen), plus-minus ±, the comparisons ≠ ≤ ≥ ≈, the degree sign °, superscript digits for powers (x² x³), vulgar fractions (½ ¼ ¾) and the percent family (% ‰). Summation ∑ and product ∏, integrals ∫ ∬ ∮, partial ∂ and nabla ∇, limits with → and ∞, the set symbols ∈ ∉ ⊂ ⊆ ∪ ∩ ∅, the number sets ℝ ℕ ℤ ℚ ℂ, logic ∀ ∃ ∧ ∨ ¬ ⇒ ⇔, and the proof marks ∴ ∵ ∎. Greek letters (α β γ δ θ λ μ σ φ Ω) come from the Greek block and are the same characters used in Greek text.
In plain text these read well one line at a time. For multi-line equations, LaTeX or an equation editor is still the right tool, but for a formula in a chat, a comment or a slide title, Unicode is faster and copies anywhere.
Math Symbols in Documents and Spreadsheets
Google Docs, Word, Pages and Notion accept every symbol here as normal text – you can change its font size and colour like any letter. Excel and Google Sheets treat them as text too, which is useful for labels (≥ 18, ± 2 %) but means × will not multiply cells; keep * for formulas. Discord, Slack and WhatsApp render them as is, so ∑ or √ in a message looks exactly as it does here.
