Braille represents letters as patterns of up to six raised dots in a 3×2 cell. Unicode reserves a whole block for these patterns (U+2800–U+28FF), so a Braille cell is an ordinary text character: it can be copied, pasted, searched and displayed on any modern phone or computer without a special font. This translator produces Grade 1 (uncontracted) English Braille – one cell per letter – which is the form taught first and the one used for names and labels.
The output follows the standard conventions: a capital indicator ⠠ before an uppercase letter, a number indicator ⠼ before a run of digits (which reuse the cells for a–j), and common punctuation. Spaces become blank cells (⠀) so the text keeps its shape when pasted.

The first ten letters a–j use only the top four dots. Letters k–t add dot 3 to the same shapes, and u–z add dots 3 and 6 (w, which was added later, is the exception: ⠺). Numbers borrow the a–j shapes after a number sign, so ⠼⠁ is 1 and ⠼⠚ is 0. Learning those ten base shapes therefore unlocks most of the alphabet – the dot-number row on this page shows the pattern for every character you type.
The dots on this page are flat glyphs, not raised bumps, so they are not readable by touch. Use the output for teaching materials, name cards, tattoo designs, social posts about accessibility, puzzle games and decorative text. For documents that a blind reader will actually use, Braille should be produced by an embosser or read through a refreshable Braille display, both of which work from ordinary text – so keep the plain English alongside the Braille.
Unicode Braille patterns render on Windows, macOS, iOS, Android and every major browser. They work in Instagram captions and bios, Discord, WhatsApp, X and Reddit. Because every cell has the same width, Braille also lines up neatly in monospace contexts like code comments and terminal art.
Grade 1 (uncontracted): one cell per letter. Grade 2 uses contractions for common words and letter groups and follows many rules, so it is not produced here.
