Comment sections are walls of identical plain text, which is why a comment in 𝗯𝗼𝗹𝗱 or sᴍᴀʟʟ ᴄᴀᴘs gets read – and often replied to – more than the rest. Unicode makes that possible in every comment box: YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, Reddit (which has its own markdown but also shows Unicode), LinkedIn and news sites. This page adds the conventions of comment culture: the ↳ reply arrow, 📌 for a creator-pinned look, 🥇 “first”, a bold timestamp for YouTube (0:42), 👏 between words for emphasis, and the ❝ ❞ quote-reply format.

Use the styles sparingly. One bold sentence reads as confident; a whole paragraph in bold reads as shouting. The rows keep the body plain and style only the marker or the opening.

Comment Conventions by Platform

Where each row fits:

YouTube – Timestamp row (0:42 becomes a clickable link when typed plain – the row styles it bold, so type the time plain if you need the link), Pinned style for creators
Instagram and TikTok – Bold comment, Fire reaction, Applause for hype; Reply marker in threads
Facebook and LinkedIn – Italic comment and Quote reply for discussion; avoid emoji rows on LinkedIn
Reddit – Unicode shows as-is; markdown bold (**text**) is the native alternative

Getting Noticed Without Spam

Platforms rank comments by engagement, and readers skim. A styled opener works because it is rare; if every comment on a post is styled, none stands out. Say something specific in plain text after the styled marker – the Checkmark and Speech rows are built for that: ✓ or 💬 in front, your point in plain letters. Comments that are all symbols or all caps are more likely to be filtered as spam by YouTube and Instagram.

Filters and Limits

Comment boxes accept Unicode almost everywhere, but some sites strip combining marks (the Highlighted row uses an underline mark) and a few block full-width letters as “abuse of formatting”. Bold, italic and small caps are single characters and pass. YouTube removes comments containing certain repeated symbols; keep one marker per comment. Accessibility: screen-reader users hear styled letters spelled out, another reason to keep the body plain.
