Extra spaces creep into text from justified PDFs, spreadsheet exports, OCR, old typing habits (two spaces after a full stop) and copy-pasting between apps that treat tabs differently. What Counts as Extra
The main row keeps one ordinary space between words and one line break between lines. Everything else is removed.
- Two or more spaces → one space
- Tabs → one space (or four spaces with the tab row)
- Spaces before a line break or at the start of a line → removed
- Non-breaking spaces from web pages → treated as spaces
Removing All Spaces
Hashtags, usernames, coupon codes and some form fields refuse spaces. “Remove all spaces” joins the words directly (hello world → helloworld); pair it with the case converter for camelCase or the slug generator for hyphenated URLs. “Remove all whitespace” additionally deletes line breaks, giving one continuous string – useful for minified data and long codes.
Spaces in Code and Data
Indentation matters in code, so use “Tabs → 4 spaces” or “Trim each line” rather than the main row, which would collapse indentation. For CSV or log data, trim lines first, then remove duplicate or empty lines with the companion tools. Nothing you paste leaves your browser.
