Unicode Text Guide โ€“ How Unicode Fonts, Symbols and Editors Work

Everything behind the tools on Pro Texty: what Unicode text is, which Unicode blocks the 20 font styles come from, where styled text works, when to avoid it, and how symbols and emoji differ.

In short

Unicode text (also called "Unicode fonts" or "fancy text") is plain text written with characters from other Unicode blocks โ€“ mostly the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block โ€“ that look like bold, italic, script or gothic letters. Because the style is part of each character rather than formatting applied on top, it survives copy-and-paste into Instagram, LinkedIn, Discord and anywhere that strips formatting. Pro Texty offers 20 such styles and 5,000+ symbols, and a Unicode editor that restyles only the text you select.

How Unicode fonts work

Unicode assigns a number (a code point) to every character in every writing system โ€“ over 150,000 of them. Besides the ordinary Latin letters at U+0041โ€“U+007A, the standard also encodes letter variants that mathematicians need to tell apart on paper: a bold ๐€, an italic ๐ด, a script ๐’œ, a fraktur ๐”„ and a double-struck ๐”ธ are each their own character.

A Unicode text generator is a lookup table: it swaps each letter you type for the matching variant. Type A (U+0041) and choose Bold, and you get ๐€ (U+1D400). The result is still text โ€“ you can paste it, search it, and every reader sees the same glyphs โ€“ but it is not formatting, so it cannot be "un-bolded" by an app the way <b> tags can.

The Unicode blocks behind fancy text

  • Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400โ€“U+1D7FF) โ€“ bold, italic, bold italic, script, fraktur, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace letters and digits. The source of 13 of the 20 Pro Texty styles.
  • Enclosed Alphanumerics (U+2460โ€“U+24FF) and Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement (U+1F100โ€“U+1F1FF) โ€“ circled โ’ถ, bubble ๐Ÿ…, squared ๐Ÿ„ฐ and filled-square ๐Ÿ…ฐ letters, plus circled numbers.
  • Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms (U+FF00โ€“U+FFEF) โ€“ the wide "vaporwave" letters ๏ผฐ๏ฝ’๏ฝ ๏ผด๏ฝ…๏ฝ˜๏ฝ”๏ฝ™ used in East Asian typography.
  • Phonetic Extensions and Superscripts and Subscripts โ€“ small caps แด˜ส€แด แด›แด‡xแด›ส, superscript แต€โฑโฟสธ letters and subscript digits โ‚โ‚‚โ‚ƒ.
  • Combining Diacritical Marks (U+0300โ€“U+036F) โ€“ marks that attach to the previous letter: combining low line U+0332 gives uฬฒnฬฒdฬฒeฬฒrฬฒlฬฒiฬฒnฬฒeฬฒ, long stroke overlay U+0336 gives sฬถtฬถrฬถiฬถkฬถeฬถ. Stacking many of them produces "Zalgo" glitch text.
  • Latin Extended / IPA โ€“ the flipped letters ษ q ษ” p ว used by upside-down text generators.

The 20 Unicode text styles on Pro Texty

Every style is a reversible character map, so the Unicode text editor can convert styled text back to plain letters or switch it to another style. Code-point ranges cover the capital letters; lowercase letters follow immediately after.

Where Unicode text works (and where it doesn't)

Any field that accepts Unicode input accepts styled text โ€“ the exceptions are usernames and handles, which platforms restrict to a small ASCII set so they can be typed and linked reliably.

PlatformWorks inWatch out for
InstagramBio, name field, captions, comments, Threads postsUsernames allow only aโ€“z, 0โ€“9, "." and "_"
TikTokBio, display name, captions, commentsUsernames are plain ASCII; some styles are narrowed in captions
LinkedInPosts, headline, About section, comments (LinkedIn has no native bold)Keep it to a few words โ€“ screen readers and the search index don't read styled letters
X / TwitterPosts, display name, bio@handles are ASCII only
DiscordMessages, nicknames, status, channel namesPrefer Markdown (**bold**) inside messages; Unicode is for names and places Markdown is unavailable
WhatsApp / TelegramMessages, status, group names, profile nameBoth apps also support *bold* / _italic_ markup
FacebookPosts, comments, bio, page name (usually)Profile names are reviewed โ€“ stylised names may be rejected
YouTubeVideo titles, descriptions, comments, channel nameTitles with heavy styling can lower search matching
Games (PUBG, Free Fire, Robloxโ€ฆ)Player names, clan tagsEach game whitelists its own character set โ€“ test first

Accessibility, SEO and when not to use it

Styled Unicode letters are different characters, and that has costs. Screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA) may read ๐‡๐ข as "mathematical bold capital H, mathematical bold small I", read it letter by letter, or skip it. Search engines do not fold ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ to "bold", so a styled headline will not rank for the plain word. Some older devices draw boxes (โ˜) for the newer blocks.

Practical rules

  • Style a few words โ€“ a name, a heading, a call-to-action โ€“ not whole paragraphs.
  • Never put essential information (prices, dates, links, contact details) in styled text only.
  • Prefer styles from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block; they have the broadest font support.
  • On platforms with native formatting (WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Reddit) use their Markdown-style markup for body text and keep Unicode for names.
  • Preview on a phone before posting โ€“ the editor shows the exact characters that will be pasted.

Text symbols vs. emoji

A text symbol is a single Unicode character drawn by a regular font โ€“ โ™ฅ (U+2665), โ˜… (U+2605), โ†’ (U+2192), โœ“ (U+2713). An emoji is a character (or sequence) that platforms render as a colour picture. Many symbols exist in both forms: โ™ฅ followed by the invisible variation selector-16 (U+FE0F) becomes the red โ™ฅ๏ธ emoji, and โ˜€ becomes โ˜€๏ธ. Flags are pairs of "regional indicator" letters, and family or profession emoji are several characters joined with a zero-width joiner.

The practical difference: text symbols look the same everywhere and can be coloured by the surrounding text; emoji look different on every platform and are always full-colour. The Pro Texty symbol library keeps the two apart โ€“ one entry per character, 5,000+ characters in 37 categories โ€“ so you can pick the exact form you want.

Unicode text editor vs. text generator

A Unicode text converter takes your whole input and shows it in every style โ€“ the fastest way to grab one styled line. A Unicode text editor treats styles like a word processor treats bold and italic: select a word, apply a style, keep typing in plain text, mix three styles in one caption, drop in symbols from the library, undo, and copy the finished piece. Pro Texty is built around the editor; every single-style page on the site is a shortcut into it.

How to type Unicode characters without a generator

Windows

  • Win + . opens the emoji & symbol picker (Windows 10/11).
  • Alt codes on the numeric keypad: hold Alt, type the decimal code, release โ€“ Alt+3 โ™ฅ, Alt+0169 ยฉ. Laptops without a keypad usually need Fn.
  • In Word: type the hex code, then press Alt + X (2665 โ†’ โ™ฅ).

macOS

  • Ctrl + Cmd + Space opens the Character Viewer.
  • Enable the Unicode Hex Input keyboard, then hold Option and type the four-digit code point.

iPhone & Android

  • The emoji keyboard covers emoji and the most common symbols; long-press letters for accented forms.
  • For styled letters or rarer symbols, copy from a library โ€“ phones have no code-point input.

HTML, CSS & code

  • HTML entity: &#9829; or &#x2665; โ†’ โ™ฅ
  • JavaScript: "โ™ฅ" or "\u{1D400}" for characters outside the BMP.
  • CSS content: content: "\2665";

Frequently asked questions

What is Unicode text?

Unicode text is ordinary text that uses characters from beyond the basic Latin alphabet โ€“ for example the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block, where ๐€ (U+1D400) is a separate character from A (U+0041). Because the styling is part of the character itself, it survives copy-paste into any app that accepts Unicode.

Are Unicode fonts real fonts?

No. A font is a file installed on a device; Unicode "fonts" are sets of look-alike characters. That is why they work in Instagram bios and usernames, where you cannot choose a font, and why every viewer sees the same letters regardless of the app or device.

Why do some Unicode letters show as boxes or question marks?

The device is missing a font that contains that character. Modern iOS, Android, Windows 10/11 and macOS cover every style listed on this page, but very old Android builds, some smart TVs and embedded systems do not. Styles from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block have the widest support.

Is Unicode text bad for accessibility or SEO?

It can be. Screen readers may announce "mathematical bold capital A" or skip the word entirely, and search engines do not match ๐›๐จ๐ฅ๐ to "bold". Use styled text for emphasis and decoration โ€“ names, headings, a few words โ€“ and keep essential information in plain text.

What is the difference between a Unicode text generator and a Unicode text editor?

A generator converts your whole input into one style at a time. The Pro Texty Unicode text editor lets you select any part of your text and restyle just that selection, mix styles in one paragraph, insert symbols, undo and copy the finished result โ€“ like a word processor for Unicode.

How do I type Unicode symbols without a generator?

On Windows use Win + . for the emoji/symbol picker or Alt codes on the numeric keypad (Alt+3 = โ™ฅ). On macOS press Ctrl + Cmd + Space, or enable the Unicode Hex Input keyboard and hold Option while typing the code point. Phones expose most symbols through the emoji keyboard. For anything else, copy from a symbol library.
