How Unicode fonts work

Unicode assigns a number (a code point) to every character in every writing system – over 150,000 of them. Besides the ordinary Latin letters at U+0041–U+007A, the standard also encodes letter variants that mathematicians need to tell apart on paper: a bold 𝐀, an italic 𝐴, a script 𝒜, a fraktur 𝔄 and a double-struck 𝔸 are each their own character.

A Fancy Text Generator is a lookup table: it swaps each letter you type for the matching variant. Type A (U+0041) and choose Bold, and you get 𝐀 (U+1D400). The result is still text – you can paste it, search it, and every reader sees the same glyphs – but it is not formatting, so it cannot be "un-bolded" by an app the way <b> tags can.

The Unicode blocks behind fancy text

• Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols (U+1D400–U+1D7FF) – bold, italic, bold italic, script, fraktur, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace letters and digits. The source of 13 styles in the reference table below.
• Enclosed Alphanumerics (U+2460–U+24FF) and Enclosed Alphanumeric Supplement (U+1F100–U+1F1FF) – circled Ⓐ, bubble 🅐, squared 🄰 and filled-square 🅰 letters, plus circled numbers.
• Halfwidth and Fullwidth Forms (U+FF00–U+FFEF) – the wide "vaporwave" letters Ｐｒｏ Ｔｅｘｔｙ used in East Asian typography.
• Phonetic Extensions and Superscripts and Subscripts – small caps ᴘʀᴏ ᴛᴇxᴛʏ, superscript ᵀⁱⁿʸ letters and subscript digits ₁₂₃.
• Combining Diacritical Marks (U+0300–U+036F) – marks that attach to the previous letter: combining low line U+0332 gives u̲n̲d̲e̲r̲l̲i̲n̲e̲, long stroke overlay U+0336 gives s̶t̶r̶i̶k̶e̶. Stacking many of them produces "Zalgo" glitch text.
• Latin Extended / IPA – the flipped letters ɐ q ɔ p ǝ used by upside-down text generators.

Core Unicode text style reference

Every style is a reversible character map, so the Unicode text editor can convert styled text back to plain letters or switch it to another style. Code-point ranges cover the capital letters; lowercase letters follow immediately after.

Where Unicode text works (and where it doesn't)

Any field that accepts Unicode input accepts styled text – the exceptions are usernames and handles, which platforms restrict to a small ASCII set so they can be typed and linked reliably.

Accessibility, SEO and when not to use it

Styled Unicode letters are different characters, and that has costs. Screen readers (VoiceOver, TalkBack, NVDA) may read 𝐇𝐢 as "mathematical bold capital H, mathematical bold small I", read it letter by letter, or skip it. Search engines do not fold 𝐛𝐨𝐥𝐝 to "bold", so a styled headline will not rank for the plain word. Some older devices draw boxes (☐) for the newer blocks.

Practical rules

• Style a few words – a name, a heading, a call-to-action – not whole paragraphs.
• Never put essential information (prices, dates, links, contact details) in styled text only.
• Prefer styles from the Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols block; they have the broadest font support.
• On platforms with native formatting (WhatsApp, Discord, Slack, Reddit) use their Markdown-style markup for body text and keep Unicode for names.
• Preview on a phone before posting – the editor shows the exact characters that will be pasted.

Text symbols vs. emoji

A text symbol is a single Unicode character drawn by a regular font – ♥ (U+2665), ★ (U+2605), → (U+2192), ✓ (U+2713). An emoji is a character (or sequence) that platforms render as a colour picture. Many symbols exist in both forms: ♥ followed by the invisible variation selector-16 (U+FE0F) becomes the red ♥️ emoji, and ☀ becomes ☀️. Flags are pairs of "regional indicator" letters, and family or profession emoji are several characters joined with a zero-width joiner.

The practical difference: text symbols are drawn by the destination font and usually follow the surrounding text colour, while emoji are typically shown in platform-specific artwork.
