Styled letters are Unicode characters, not fonts β screen readers may read them letter by letter and search engines don't match them to plain words, so keep essential details in plain text. Unicode accessibility guide
A caption is a small piece of layout, and most apps give you no layout tools: no headings, no blank lines that stick, no bullet points. Unicode fills the gaps. Italic serif and small caps make a first line that reads as a heading; a bold opener with π hooks the βmoreβ tap; β β marks a quote; a βββ divider separates the caption from hashtags. The Line-break spacer row is the important one: it ends your line with a blank braille character (U+2800), the only reliable way to keep an empty line in an Instagram caption.
The list rows turn a comma-separated line into bullet or arrow points; the Hashtags row adds # to each word. Everything is text and works in Instagram, TikTok, Facebook, LinkedIn and YouTube descriptions.
Type one caption line (or a comma-separated list for the list rows).
Choose a heading style, a hook, a spacer or a divider.
Copy, paste into the caption, and repeat for the next line.
Instagram, and sometimes TikTok, removes empty lines. Two fixes:
Feeds truncate captions after the first line or two, so the opener does the work: Bold opener or Hook line π for a how-to post, Italic caption or Aesthetic lowercase for a mood post, Quote caption for a saying. The body stays plain text β it is the searchable part. Lists (Dot list, Arrow list) suit steps and product features. End with the Divider row, then hashtags from the Hashtags row on the last line, where they do not interrupt reading.
Instagram and TikTok search captions for keywords, but styled letters are different characters, so keywords in italic or small caps do not match. Keep the words you want found in plain text β the styles are for the opener and the sign-off. Screen readers spell out styled letters; a short styled first line followed by a plain body keeps the caption listenable. Alt text on the image should always be plain.
Use the Line-break spacer row β it ends the line with the invisible braille blank β , which Instagram keeps.
Styled words are not matched by search. Put keywords in plain text and style only the opener.
