Minecraft usernames are plain letters, numbers and underscores, but many other text fields accept Unicode: server names and MOTDs, signs, book pages, renamed items, chat, and nicknames set by server plugins. Minecraft ships its own pixel font with a large Unicode range, and Java Edition falls back to a Unicode font for characters it lacks โ so most of the styles here render in-game, though some look better than others.
This page groups the styles that work well in Minecraft's font and explains the limits so you are not surprised by boxes.
Java Edition's default font covers Latin, accented letters, common symbols and โ with "Force Unicode Font" or automatic fallback โ most of the Unicode blocks used here. Small caps, full-width and circled letters render reliably. The mathematical alphabets (bold, double-struck, monospace) render on recent versions but can appear in the fallback font rather than the pixel style. Bedrock Edition is stricter and shows more missing-glyph boxes, especially on consoles.
The MOTD in server.properties accepts Unicode directly (save the file as UTF-8) and is the most common place for styled text โ a small-caps server name with โ or โ shows in the multiplayer list. Server plugins such as EssentialsX allow /nick with Unicode, so players use fancy nicknames while their real username stays plain. Colour codes (ยงa, &a) work alongside Unicode fonts.
Signs and anvil renames accept pasted Unicode, useful for shop signs (โ Weapons โ) and decorative labels. Books display Unicode in the fallback font. Because Minecraft's font is monospaced-ish, full-width characters take extra room and a sign line may hold only 7โ8 of them.
Many servers filter or block Unicode in chat to prevent spam and impersonation, and some reject nicknames with look-alike letters. Keep chat plain unless the server allows styled text, and use fancy fonts for names, signs and your own builds.
