Which Check Mark Should You Use?
The light check mark ✓ (U+2713) matches normal text weight and is the best choice inside sentences and spreadsheets. The heavy check mark ✔ (U+2714) is bolder and reads well at the start of a list line. ✅ is an emoji: it renders as a green box on most devices and is the loudest option, ideal for social posts and chat. ☑ shows a ticked checkbox and pairs with the empty ☐ for to-do lists.

Check Mark vs Tick Mark
"Check mark" is the American name and "tick" the British one for the same ✓ symbol – Unicode calls it CHECK MARK. Both terms find the same characters in the search box above. The cross ✗ is a "ballot X" in Unicode; ✖ is the "heavy multiplication X", which is why it lines up with × in maths.
Typing a Check Mark from the Keyboard
Windows: Alt + 10003 (✓) or Alt + 10004 (✔) on the numeric keypad, or Win + . to open the emoji picker and search "check". In Word, the Wingdings font maps ü to a check mark, but that is a font trick, not a real character, and it breaks when pasted elsewhere. macOS: Ctrl + Cmd + Space and search "check mark".
