Where a font style swaps each letter for a different character, an effect works on top of the letters you already have. Combining marks draw a line through, under or over every character; reversal and flipping reorder them; spacing pushes them apart; and decorative wrappers put symbols around the whole phrase. How the Effects Are Built

Three different mechanisms, with different reliability.

  • Combining marks β€” strikethrough, underline, overline, glitch and wavy effects attach an invisible-width mark after each letter
  • Reordering β€” reverse and upside-down rewrite the character order and swap in flipped look-alikes
  • Spacing β€” spaced and wide text insert real space characters or use full-width forms
  • Symbol wrappers β€” hearts, crowns, flowers, arrows and brackets sit around the text and never touch the letters

Where Effects Break

Combining marks are the ones to watch. Platforms that normalise usernames often strip them, so a struck-through name can arrive plain. Symbol wrappers are far more durable because the symbols are ordinary characters.
