Kaomoji (顔文字, "face characters") are emoticons built from Unicode letters and symbols, read upright rather than sideways. Unlike emoji they are not pictures, but fonts and text rendering can change their alignment and appearance. They can be pasted into many plain-text fields, although some fields restrict characters. The Famous Ones
The Lenny face appeared on a Finnish image board in 2012 and became the universal "suggestive" or "smug" reaction. The shrug ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ uses the katakana character ツ (tsu) as a smiling face and has been an internet staple since the mid-2000s. The table flip and its reply "put the table back" ┬─┬ノ( º _ ºノ) express frustration and calm respectively. ʕ•ᴥ•ʔ is the bear, (◕‿◕) the happy face, (ಥ﹏ಥ) crying with Kannada letters as eyes.
Pasting Kaomoji Correctly
The shrug contains a backslash, which Markdown (Reddit, Discord, Slack) treats as an escape character – it disappears when posted. Type it as ¯\\_(ツ)_/¯ with two backslashes on those platforms, or use the version copied from here and add a second backslash if the arm vanishes. Faces with combining marks (the Lenny face's ͜ʖ) may render slightly differently across fonts but stay recognisable.

Kaomoji vs Emoji
