In GTA Online the name above your character is your Rockstar Social Club nickname, which allows letters, numbers, hyphens and underscores โ no spaces and no symbols. Crews are where the personality goes: a crew has a name, a short tag shown beside membersโ names, and a motto and description on the Social Club website, and those fields accept a wider range of characters.
Crew tags are limited in length and are drawn in the crew colour in-game, so plain readable letters work best. The styled rows on this page are for the crew name, motto and description, for Discord and recruitment posts, and for the Social Club profile where Unicode displays fully.

Crew Recruitment
Crews are found through the Social Club crew browser and through Discord and forum posts, all of which search plain text. A crew named ๐ท๐๐ ๐พ๐๐๐๐๐ will not match a search for โLos Santosโ, so keep the name plain and put the styling in the motto and description. The Motto row (โ italic โ) and Crown row suit a recruitment post header; the Money and Currency letters rows fit heist and business crews.
Changing Your Name
Rockstar grants one free Social Club nickname change per account; additional changes are paid through the Social Club website and take effect the next time you load the game. Crew names and tags can be edited by the crew leader at any time from the Social Club, and the change propagates to all members. Rockstarโs terms prohibit offensive and impersonating names, and crews have been renamed or deleted for breaching them.
