How Alphabetical Order Is Decided
Sorting uses the natural-language rules of your browser rather than raw character codes, which avoids the classic surprises.
- Case-insensitive: apple, Banana, cherry (not Banana, apple, cherry)
- Numeric-aware: file2 before file10
- Accents fold: éclair sorts with eclair
- Leading spaces are ignored; empty lines sort to the top – remove them first if unwanted
Sorting Bibliographies and Names
Reference lists sort by the first word of each entry, which is the author surname in most citation styles – paste the entries one per line and sort A–Z. Rosters given as “First Last” will sort by first name; if you need surname order, put the surname first (Last, First) before sorting. The tool never changes the text of a line, only its position.
Random Order and Numbering
“Shuffle” gives a random order that is fixed for the same input, so a shared shuffled list looks identical to everyone; change a character (add today’s date as a line) for a new draw. “Number the lines” prefixes 1., 2., 3. … and is often used right after sorting to produce a ranked list for a post or a document.
