Zoom lets you change your display name before or during a meeting, and it accepts Unicode – so a styled name shows on your video tile, in the participant list, in the chat and in the recording. That is useful for the practical things meeting names carry: pronouns, a role (Host, Speaker, Interpreter), a team or company tag, or a ✋ to signal you have a question in a large webinar.

Keep it readable. Tiles are small and names truncate, so the plain spelling of your name plus one tag beats a fully styled name. Many organisations set a naming policy for meetings; where one exists, follow it and use the styles only for the optional part.

How to Rename Yourself in Zoom

Three places, depending on when you want the change.

Before joining – Zoom desktop: Settings → Profile → Edit My Profile (changes it everywhere)
When joining – type the name in the join dialog if the host allows it
During the meeting – hover your video tile → More (…) → Rename, or Participants → your name → Rename
Webinars – panelists can rename; attendees usually cannot, depending on host settings

Pronouns, Roles and Accessibility

Zoom has a dedicated pronouns field in the profile that displays next to your name; prefer it where your account supports it, and use the Pronouns row when it does not. Role tags (· Host, · Interpreter, | Design) help in large meetings and training sessions. Screen readers and live captions read the participant list, and styled letters are spelled out character by character – so keep at least your first name in plain letters for accessibility and for people who need to find you in a long participant list.

Limits and Host Controls

Hosts can lock renaming for a meeting, in which case pasted styles will not apply. Some enterprise accounts enforce names from the directory and will override a custom name. Zoom truncates long names on small tiles, so a name plus one short tag is the practical maximum. Emoji display in the participant list but can look cluttered in a professional meeting – the ✋ and 🔇 rows are best for large webinars where they convey status.
