Styled letters are Unicode characters, not fonts โ screen readers may read them letter by letter and search engines don't match them to plain words, so keep essential details in plain text. Learn more
Since the 2019 gamertag update, an Xbox gamertag is up to 12 characters chosen by you plus an automatic #1234 suffix if the name is taken, and it accepts letters from many world alphabets โ Latin, Cyrillic, Greek, Japanese, Korean and more โ but not the decorative mathematical alphabets, symbols or emoji. So fancy-font gamertags are not possible; what is possible is a clean, unique plain gamertag plus fully styled text in the bio and motto fields of your profile.
This page therefore does two things: the โGamertag-safeโ rows strip anything Xbox will reject so you can see what survives, and the Bio and Motto rows generate the styled text that Xbox does display on your profile page, in the Xbox app and on the Series X|S dashboard.
Type a gamertag idea or a bio line.
For the gamertag, use a Gamertag-safe row; for the bio and motto, any styled row.
Change your gamertag in Settings โ Account โ Gamertag (first change free); edit bio and motto in Profile โ Customize profile.
Rules from the gamertag change screen:
The profile bio (up to 1,000 characters) and motto accept Unicode fully, so bold, gothic, double-struck and script text all display, along with โ โฆ symbols and box brackets. Most players put a styled tagline in the motto (shown under the gamertag) and a longer styled block in the bio with clan, platforms and Discord. Emoji display in the bio on console and in the app.
Because symbols are out, distinctive gamertags rely on spelling and spacing: two words with a space (Night Fall), a capital in the middle (NightFall), a number that means something, or letters from another supported alphabet (Nightfall โ ะะฐะนััะพะป in Cyrillic). The Gamertag-safe row shows exactly what remains after Xbox strips unsupported characters.
No โ gamertags accept only letters and numbers from supported alphabets. Use styled text in your bio and motto instead.
The name was already taken; Xbox adds a suffix. Choose a unique spelling to avoid it.
Yes โ bio and motto accept all Unicode styles and display on console, PC and the app.
