Bluesky deliberately ships without rich text: no bold, no italic, no headers. Unicode fonts fill the gap the same way they did on early Twitter โ€“ bold characters for a hook line, italic for a quote, monospace for a code snippet. They render identically in the official app, on the web, and in third-party clients built on the AT Protocol, because they are plain text.

Posts are 300 characters and letter-style fonts do not change the count, so styling a word costs nothing.

How to Use This Generator

  1. Type your post, display name or bio.
  2. Copy Bold for emphasis, Italic for quotes, or a decorated style.
  3. Paste into Bluesky. Keep hashtags and @handles plain.

Where Bluesky Fonts Work

Everything with free text: posts and replies (300 characters), your display name (64 characters), bio (256 characters), feed names and descriptions, and list names. Your handle (@name.bsky.social or a custom domain) is a DNS-style name and cannot contain fancy characters.

  • โœ“ Posts and replies โ€“ 300 characters
  • โœ“ Display name โ€“ 64 characters
  • โœ“ Bio โ€“ 256 characters
  • โœ“ Custom feed and list names โ€“ supported
  • โœ“ Handle โ€“ plain domain characters only

Facets, Links and Hashtags

Bluesky detects links, mentions and hashtags as "facets" using byte offsets. Unicode fonts inside a hashtag or mention break that detection, so #tag and @user must stay in plain text. Styled text around them is fine and does not affect link detection.

Cross-Posting with X and Threads

Many people post the same text to Bluesky, X and Threads. Unicode bold and italic look the same on all three, which makes it the one styling approach that works everywhere โ€“ X Premium formatting and any future Threads formatting would not carry over, but Unicode characters do. Bluesky's 300-character limit is the tightest of the three, so write for it first.

Accessibility on Bluesky

Bluesky's community is attentive to alt text and accessibility. Screen readers may spell Unicode-styled words letter by letter, so use bold for a word or two, keep the body plain, and never style the part of a post that carries the key information.
